The property market in Sardinia

The UK has a large and competitive property market. An overwhelming majority of properties are advertised openly, with comprehensive details, and it is easy to get a good idea of the range of properties, prices and amenities in a particular locality. In the UK most sales are handled by estate agents, although there is a small but growing trend towards DiY buying or selling, and use of the internet.

In Sardinia however the situation is rather different. You may need to get used to seeing few specific details about properties, they may suddenly become "unavailable" and it may take some time to arrange an appointment to see a particular property. Get used to seeing bare kitchens because in Italy it is common practice to take your kitchen, lock, stock, barrel and sink with you when you move out. Don't be put off by poorly presented premises; Italians often make little effort to "gild the lily" and any fresh coffee aromas really are not just for effect!

The majority of property sales in Sardinia do not go through estate agents and it is difficult for outsiders to get a clear picture of the range of properties, prices and amenities. There are plenty of properties for sale, but you won't find many of them in estate agents' windows, on the internet or by driving around looking for "Vendesi" (For Sale) boards. The best value-for-money properties are those not openly advertised.
