Tourist Information for Sardinia

Sardinia has a long summer and the beaches are often perfect for sun-bathing in April and October, but even though the weather may be perfect, people will be few and far between during those months. The majority of tourists to Sardinia are Italians, and parts of the island get very busy and very expensive from mid-June to August. Accommodation and car hire can be difficult to arrange during the high season, if not pre-booked. Outside this period, prices drop and you will be surprised how quiet and accessible the island becomes.

Currency is the Euro (£1 = ~ €1 @ tourist rates at the moment). Time is 1 hour ahead of UK. Opening times for shops are typically 9am-1pm & 4pm-8pm; banks 8:30am-1:30pm & 3pm-4:30pm. Watch out for the frequent "Festa" days when almost everything closes!

The international telephone dialling code for Italy is 0039. If you become a regular traveller to Sardinia we recommend you consider avoiding mobile phone "roaming" charges by buying an Italian phone, or Italian SIM card for your existing phone.

It has been said that Sardinia is an island of experiences rather than sights. D H Lawrence's famous quote after touring Sardinia, "lost between Europe and Africa, and belonging to nowhere," encapsulates the uniqueness of Sardinia. You can just sight-see or sun-soak, but Sardinia offers you so much more.As well as the Italian National "Festa" days (equivalent to our Bank Holidays, but they have more of them!) the island has its own extensive calendar of local district or village celebrations. These lively annual events usually have religious or cultural origins and are a wonderful opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in some of Sardinia's heritage.

Spectacular beaches and coastlines aplenty, but there are also many sites of historical interest, village festivals and nature reserves waiting for you to experience. Sardinia is an excellent location for birding, walking, climbing and cycling holidays. Horse riding, diving, sailing, fishing and all forms of are just some of the activities for which the island is renowned. Jeep safaris to explore inland, or catamaran excursions to survey the beautiful coastline, are available and we can arrange reduced rates for you through our connections with "Agrisport Zia Maria."

There are limited train services between some of the major cities, but some only run during the Summer. They tend to be slow and rolling stock can be rather antiquated. However if you can get to a station and time is not at a premium, this can be a cheap and enjoyable way of reaching some parts of the island.Look out for the "Little Green Train" (Trenino Verde) which covers most of the island for tourists during Summer.

Bus services are far more extensive, with local services linking more isolated villages with the intercity routes. However, finding reliable local timetable information requires some perserverance and services to remote areas can be infrequent and unreliable. Be wary of getting stuck overnight at your idyllic, isolated daytime beauty spot! Try this website for information on getting around Sardinia without a car.

You really need your own vehicle if you want to be able to conveniently enjoy exploring all of Sardinia's delights, and then be sure of getting back to your base for the night. If you are adventurous it is easy to get off the beaten track and find places that few British people will have visited, but make sure you have a vehicle with plenty of ground clearance. You will need a 4x4 to reach some of these remote jewels. When driving, be sure to carry all vehicle and driving documents with you. Check with your car hire company for local driving regulations and keep dipped headlights on during the day when driving outside towns.
